In response to an invitation from heart@geneva Abigail Janjic created an interactive piece stemming from work that combined dance and visual art completed during a recent residence in Belgrade.
“I decided to close the residence in Serbia with a performance piece that integrated dance as part of my work for the first time. A dancer was invited to move across an in-situ installation made up of interlacing wooden dowelling rods and pieces of latex. The dancers body moved and reacted in relation to the elements that she encountered within the space. The final version of Anima was conceived and designed using one of the key positions of the dancer, reflecting a specific tension. Anima can therefore be seen as a direct result of the work produced in Belgrade. It also demonstrates a porosity between materials and tension with movements in space.”
Working together with the Pavillon ADC, which focuses on contemporary dance, Anima creates a poetical connection with the space. The sculpture made up of steel tubes invites the visitors to directly interact with it, testing their physical limits.
The visitors are invited to twist their bodies in a space populated with metal elements in changing colours, juxtaposing their bodies with the formal elements of the sculpture (curves, right angles, the softness and hardness of metal).
An intimate relationship between the work and the body is thus created. By moving with, against or even under the twisted and convoluted forms, Anima produces a hybrid form that is in between sculpture and a work in progress.
Note: Initially three sculptures were going to be produced for this project. The work was going to be called “Anima – A Danced Path”, producing a sort of danced pathway on Sturm Square. Following budget reductions only one sculpture was completed, making it a solo piece simply called “Anima”.

Pour répondre à la proposition d’heart@geneva, Abigail Janjic a imaginé une pièce interactive issue d’un travail mêlant danse et arts visuels réalisés lors d’une résidence récente à Belgrade.
« J’ai décidé de clore la résidence en Serbie avec une performance intégrant pour la première fois la danse à mon travail. Une danseuse était invitée à traverser une installation in situ faite d’entrelacs de tourillons de bois ainsi que d’éléments en latex. Le corps de la danseuse se positionnait et réagissait en fonction des éléments présentés à elle dans l’espace. La forme finale d’Anima a été pensée et dessinée en fonction d’un des positionnements clef de la danseuse, reflétant une tension particulière. Anima peut donc se lire comme une des émanations directes de la pièce produite à Belgrade. Elle révèle aussi une porosité entre matériaux, tensions dans l’espace et mouvements. »
En dialogue avec le Pavillon ADC dédié à la danse contemporaine, Anima crée un lien poétique avec ce lieu. La sculpture en tubes d’acier invite les promeneurs à interagir physiquement avec elle, à tester leurs limites corporelles.
Les promeneurs sont invités à se contorsionner dans un espace cerné d’éléments métalliques aux teintes évolutives, confrontant leurs corps avec les propriétés formelles des éléments de la sculpture (courbures, angles droits, douceur et dureté du métal).
Un rapport intime alors s’installe entre l’oeuvre et le corps. En bougeant avec, contre, ou encore sous les formes tordues et alambiquées, Anima donne à voir un statut hybride entre sculpture et processus de recherche.
Initialement, trois sculptures auraient dû être produites pour le projet. La pièce aurait dû s’appeler “Anima – Parcours dansé”, proposant une sorte de parcours Vita dansé sur la place Sturm. Suite à des coupures budgétaires, une seule sculpture a pu être réalisée, rendant la pièce exclusive et intitulée simplement “Anima.”
